Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity centers on a short informational passage about adaptations of sea creatures. Students will read the passage aloud (fluency recording), answer a mix of auto-graded questions that check comprehension and vocabulary, and complete two open-ended tasks where they explain and show their thinking. Prepare a quiet space for students to record their reading and, if possible, allow simple drawing or camera use for the multimedia task. For the paragraph question, a high-quality answer explains at least two different adaptations from the passage, describes how each helps the animal survive, and uses words from the text (e.g., camouflage, ink, jaws). For the multimedia Show It task, a high-quality response either clearly labeled photos or a short video/voice recording or a labeled drawing that shows an adaptation and explains why it helps the animal survive; students should point to specific evidence from the passage. Use these criteria (clear explanation, connection to the passage, and detail) when marking open-ended responses correct or incorrect.
