Teacher Notes (not visible to students)
This lesson teaches second graders to combine nearby words and picture cues to infer the meaning of a slightly challenging word. The short passage includes the target word used in context and simple sensory details to support inference. Use the reading fluency recording to hear students read; then guide brief discussion about which words and picture details helped them decide the meaning. For the partner activity, students will need paper and crayons or a device camera for a photo or voice recorder. Ask partners to listen and ask one question about each other's reasoning. A high-quality open-ended response will (1) name the guessed meaning, (2) point to one or two clues in the sentence or picture that support the meaning, and (3) explain briefly how the clues fit together. Teachers can mark open responses as correct if students show reasonable reasoning that links the guess to the text and picture, and incorrect if the response shows no link to the text or uses unrelated facts.
