Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity helps students practice fluent reading and comprehension. The passage is short and repetitive to support second-grade fluency practice. Use the ReadingFluencyQuestion to listen for accuracy, pacing, and expression. For small-group instruction, listen to each student read the passage aloud and give one kind, specific correction (for example, "Try saying 'Ding dong' with two short sounds"). For the open-ended ParagraphQuestion, look for answers that explain why the children were surprised and that refer to details from the passage (mentioning the bell, the two ships that passed, and the small red ship that stopped). For the multimedia Show It task, a high-quality response shows the red ship stopping at the dock and includes a clear explanation or narration. Students can draw the dock scene, record their voice describing what happened, or take a short video acting out the ending. Grade open-ended responses as correct if they show understanding of who stopped at the dock and why, and incorrect if they only repeat one word or give unrelated content.
