Teacher Notes (not visible to students)
This activity focuses on reading fluency and comprehension for second graders. The passage is short and simple to let students practice reading aloud and to allow teachers to assess phrasing, accuracy, and expression. Use the ReadingFluencyQuestion recording to listen for smooth reading, correct phrasing, and correct word recognition. For class use, you can have students record individually or in small groups. No special materials are required, but you may want a classroom clock to show examples when discussing time. For the open-ended paragraph question, a high-quality answer explains why Beth fixed the clock and uses at least two details from the passage (for example: Beth said she fixed it and Miss Glen and Cliff clapped). For the multimedia Frame task, a strong response shows the event clearly — a short video acting out the scene, a drawing showing Beth fixing the clock, or a voice recording that explains the actions. Teachers can grade these open responses as correct if the student accurately describes or shows the key events: the wrong time, Beth fixing the clock, and others clapping in appreciation.
