Teacher Notes (not visible to students)
This activity teaches 3rd graders to convert between pounds and ounces using the conversion 1 lb = 16 oz. Use the sequence to introduce the idea, practice vocabulary, connect to real-world items, sort examples, check understanding with a multiple-choice item, solve a word problem, explore flexible thinking, and finish with partner sharing and a reflective paragraph. No special materials are required beyond classroom scales (if available), paper, pencils, and a simple object set (fruit, books, small bags) for estimation and demonstration. For the open-ended pages, look for explanations that show correct use of the conversion factor (multiplying or dividing by 16), clear steps or drawings that match the numbers, and real-world reasoning (e.g., why a given weight makes sense for that object). High-quality answers will include the calculation (for example, 3 lb × 16 = 48 oz), a short explanation of the steps, and if possible, a picture or estimate to support the result. Mark responses as correct if the conversion and explanation are consistent and show understanding.
